Instead of rewriting from a fictional literary canon, I chose to base my rewrite on the scientific essays of race from the Enlightenment period.
These academic articles, written by the pioneers of scientific research of the time, gathered research and theories from different disciplines such as Anthropology, Antropometry, Biology to create a categorization of the human population in terms of superior and inferior race.
These hegemonic ideas of race, is also referred to as Scientific Racism: using scientific means to justify racist ideologies.
Eugenics is...
"the study of or belief in the possibility of improving the qualities of the human species or a human population, especially by such means as discouraging reproduction by persons having genetic defects or presumed to have inheritable undesirable traits (negative eugenics) or encouraging reproduction bypersons presumed to have inheritable desirable traits (positive eugenics)".
It is a by-product of these early 'scientific' essays and theories and is often, to this day, used as genocidal and racist propaganda.
First I need to research and read some of these early articles in detail, and maybe choose one or two specific articles to base the rewrite.
I have found a good general link to start my investigation from: Scientific Racism
And an article that discuss the effect of Scientific Racism in regards to justification of slavery and segregation in USA: Scientific Racism: The Justification of Slavery and Segregated Education in America

Hi hannah,
ReplyDeleteGreat that you've found so much to get started on!
You'll be a good resource for us as we explore these ideas in the Australian context later in the semester :)
I really like this idea. You really have gotten to the heart of the matter about the "them" and "us" issue. Can't wait to see where you take this.
